Percents & Ratios

Mental percents, ratios and rates

What your child practises

Finding 1%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 25% and 50% of a number in your head, and solving ratio, rate and percent problems.

Prince Edward Island Curriculum curriculum outcome: N5; N6 · ratios, rates, and finding common percents of an amount

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. Percent means out of 100.
  2. Use 10% (divide by 10) and 1% (divide by 100) to build other percents.
  3. A ratio compares amounts. A rate compares different units, like km per hour.

Example: What is 30% of 50? 10% of 50 = 5. 30% is three of those: 3 × 5 = 15. Answer: 15
