Numbers to a Million

Read, write and compare big numbers

What your child practises

Place value to 1 000 000: digit values, standard and expanded form, number words, rounding, ordering, and using benchmarks like 500 000 on a number line.

Prince Edward Island Curriculum curriculum outcome: N1 · reading, writing and comparing whole numbers up to 1 000 000

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. Each place is worth 10 times the place to its right.
  2. Read big numbers in groups of three digits: thousands, then ones.
  3. To compare, start at the left-most place and look for the first difference.

Example: Write four hundred twelve thousand, three hundred five in digits. Thousands group: 412. Ones group: 305. Put them together: 412 305. Answer: 412 305
