Question 1
To solve x + 5 = 12, what do you do to both sides?
- Add 5
- Subtract 5
- Subtract 12
- Multiply by 5
Subtract 5
Hint: Subtracting 5 undoes adding 5. Do the same to both sides to keep the balance.
Question 2
Solve: 5x + 2 = 27
- x = 29
- x = 25
- x = 6
- x = 5
x = 5
Hint: Subtract 2 to get 5x = 25, then divide by 5.
Question 3
Solve: 2x + 3 = 11
- x = 7
- x = 4
- x = 14
- x = 8
x = 4
Hint: Subtract 3 to get 2x = 8, then divide by 2.
Question 4
To solve 3x = 18, what do you do to both sides?
- Divide by 3
- Add 3
- Subtract 3
- Multiply by 3
Divide by 3
Hint: Dividing by 3 undoes multiplying by 3.
Question 5
A scale is level with x + 3 on one side and 10 on the other. If 3 is taken from both sides, what is left?
- x = 13
- x = 7
- x = 10
- x = 3
x = 7
Hint: Taking the same amount off both sides keeps it level: x on one side, 7 on the other.
Question 6
What is the value of 10 − n when n = −4?
- 6
- −6
- 14
- −14
14
Hint: 10 − (−4) = 10 + 4.
