Easy ways to practise core french at home
- Practise a few minutes a day: greetings, numbers, then simple sentences about yourself.
- Say your answers out loud in French, even if you are not sure. Speaking is how it sticks.
- Watch French videos with subtitles and spot words that look like English (cognates).
- Look up a Francophone festival or community in Canada and share one thing you learned.
What each unit covers
Directions
Asking for and giving directions, and describing where places are (à gauche, devant, derrière, à côté de).
Places in town
Vocabulary for places in a community and the contractions au, à la, à l'.
Comparing
Making simple comparisons with plus… que, moins… que and aussi… que, and the special forms meilleur and mieux.
Describing people
Describing the personality of family, friends and teachers, with adjectives that agree in gender and number.
Cognates and strategies
Using cognates and context to understand new French words, and watching out for false friends such as librairie.
Reading short stories
Understanding key information and events in simple French stories: characters, setting, problem and solution.
The Francophone world
Communities where French is spoken around the world, such as Belgium, Haiti, Morocco and Senegal, and in Canada.
Culture and honesty
The ethics of cultural appropriation and plagiarism: crediting sources and learning from cultures respectfully.
What the report card levels look like at home
- Beginning
- Just getting started with this idea. Short, regular practice with lots of support helps most.
- Approaching
- Understands parts of it and is building confidence. Keep practising the tricky parts.
- Meeting
- Has it! Meeting is the goal for every outcome. Mixed review now and then keeps it strong.
- Exemplary
- Applies it confidently, even in new or harder situations. Try challenge mode and real-life problems.
