Grade 1 Core French: how to help at home
What your child learns in Grade 1 core french in the Saskatchewan Curriculum, and simple things to try at home.
The Big Ideas this year
- Communication Skills (1.CS.1–1.CS.4): Demonstrate an understanding of a number of oral key words, familiar phrases, questions, and basic classroom instructions in French. Provide basic personal information through oral expression supported by constant prompting. Reproduce, with prompting and support, a single French key word in print.
- General Language Strategies (1.GL.1–1.GL.2): Use visual and auditory clues with prompting for the interpretation of a listening or viewing experience. Use speaking strategies in modeled learning situations.
- Language Knowledge (1.LK.1): Demonstrate acquisition of French language concepts, related to themes.
- Culture (1.C.1): Identify elements of Francophone, First Nations, and Métis cultures with prompting.
Easy ways to practise core french at home
- Learn a few French words together, like bonjour, merci and au revoir.
- Sing a French song and clap along.
- Name colours and animals in French.
- Greet each other in French at breakfast.

Level 1 Core French starts with key words and phrases: bonjour, merci, au revoir, je m'appelle… and how old you are.
In the classroom
Names of classroom objects and the short commands a French teacher uses: écoutez, regardez, levez la main.
My family
Family words with ma and mon: ma maman, mon papa, ma sœur, mon frère.
What the report card levels look like at home
- Beginning
- Just getting started with this idea. Short, regular practice with lots of support helps most.
- Approaching
- Understands parts of it and is building confidence. Keep practising the tricky parts.
- Meeting
- Has it! Meeting is the goal for every outcome. Mixed review now and then keeps it strong.
- Exemplary
- Applies it confidently, even in new or harder situations. Try challenge mode and real-life problems.

Common questions
Learn a few French words together, like bonjour, merci and au revoir. Sing a French song and clap along. Keep sessions short, about 10 to 15 minutes, and stop on a success.
