What each unit covers

  1. Je me présente

    Speaking about oneself and one's daily life with simple sentence patterns: my name, age, likes and feelings.

  2. Majuscule et point

    Writing conventions: capital letters, spaces between words and end punctuation.

  3. Est-ce que…?

    Forming questions with “est-ce que” and recognizing the question mark.

  4. Les verbes d'action

    Present-tense endings of common action verbs, matched to the person doing the action.

  5. Couleurs et adjectifs

    Colours and simple adjectives to describe people, animals and things, including feminine forms.

  6. Histoire ou texte?

    Telling a story apart from an informational text, a key reading skill in Grade 1.

  7. Dans l'histoire

    Elements of a story (characters, setting, events) and putting events in order to retell a story.

What the report card levels look like at home

Level 1
Just getting started with this idea. Short, regular practice with lots of support helps most.
Level 2
Understands parts of it and is building confidence. Keep practising the tricky parts.
Level 3
Has it! Level 3 is the provincial standard. Mixed review now and then keeps it strong.
Level 4
Applies it confidently, even in new or harder situations. Try challenge mode and real-life problems.

Common questions

How can I help my Grade 1 child with french immersion?

Read French picture books together, even if you are learning too. Let your child tell you what is happening. Sing French songs and nursery rhymes in the car or at bath time. Keep sessions short, about 10 to 15 minutes, and stop on a success.

What does my child learn in Grade 1 french immersion in Ontario?
