Numbers to 10 000

Place value, compare and round

What your child practises

Reading, writing and comparing numbers up to 10 000: place value, expanded form, number lines, ordering and rounding.

Yukon Curriculum learning standard: Number concepts to 10 000

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. To round, look at the digit just to the right of your place.
  2. If it is 5 or more, round up. If it is 4 or less, stay.
  3. Change every digit after your place to 0.

Example: Round 4 763 to the nearest hundred. The hundreds digit is 7. Look at the tens digit: 6. 6 is 5 or more, so round up to 8 hundreds. 4 800. Answer: 4 800
