Quick Look Counting
How many? See it in a flash!
What your child practises
Practises seeing small amounts, 1 to 6, at a glance in familiar arrangements such as dice and dot patterns, without counting one by one. Ask your child to tell you how they saw it: “I saw 2 and 2.”
Prince Edward Island Curriculum curriculum outcome: 1.2 · seeing small amounts at a glance in dice and dot arrangements
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practise.
- Look at the dots without counting each one.
- Some patterns are easy to know: 1, 2, 3.
- Put small groups together to find how many.
Example: You see 3 dots and 3 dots. How many? Say 3, then count on 3 more. That is 6. Answer: 6
