Guess and Group

Smart guesses, and counting in equal groups.

What your child practises

Practises estimating a quantity to 20 using something known, such as ten, and making numbers up to 30 from equal groups of 2, 5 or 10, with or without singles.

Prince Edward Island Curriculum curriculum outcome: N6; N7 · estimating quantities to 20 and making numbers from equal groups

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. An estimate is a good guess, not an exact count.
  2. Compare to a group you know, like 10.
  3. Pick the guess that is closest.

Example: About how many beans are in a jar that holds 20? A group of 10 is easy to see. The jar looks like 2 groups of 10. Answer: About 20
