More, Less, Same

Compare groups and balance

What your child practises

Comparing groups by matching them one to one, seeing equal as balanced and unequal as unbalanced on a scale, and reading simple picture graphs.

Nunavut Curriculum approved guide: Alberta Mathematics K–9 (2007), Number · comparing quantities 1 to 10 with one-to-one correspondence

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. Match things one to one.
  2. The group with extras has more.
  3. If none are left over, the groups are the same.

Example: There are 5 cats and 3 dogs. Which group has more? Match each dog to a cat. 2 cats have no match. Answer: The cats
