Nets & Views

Fold nets into solids and picture top, front and side views

What your child practises

Matching flat nets to prisms and cylinders, working out what the parts of a net measure, and picturing an object from above, the front and the side.

Nunavut Curriculum approved guide: Alberta Mathematics K–9 (2007), Shape and Space · nets of right prisms and cylinders, and top, front and side views of objects built from rectangular prisms

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. A net is a 3-D object folded flat.
  2. A rectangular prism's net has 6 rectangles.
  3. Top, front and side views show how it looks from three directions.

Example: How many faces are in the net of a cube? A cube has 6 faces. Its net shows all 6 flat. Answer: 6

Sample questions

A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.

  1. Question 1

In a net of a cylinder, the length of the rectangle matches the…

    • circumference of the circle
    • diameter of the circle
    • area of the circle
    • radius of the circle
  2. Question 2

In a net of a cylinder, the width of the rectangle matches the…

    • area of the circle
    • circumference of the circle
    • height of the cylinder
    • radius of the circle
  3. Question 3

Three cubes sit in a row, and a fourth cube sits on top of the left end cube. You look at it from the right-hand side. What do you see?

    • a column of 4 squares
    • a column of 2 squares
    • a row of 3 squares
    • a single square
  4. Question 4

A can has a diameter of 11 cm. In its net, one side of the rectangle wraps around the circle. How long is that side? Use π ≈ 3.14 and round to 1 decimal place.
