Units
Unit 1
Think Like a Scientist
Planning a fair test, working safely, design criteria and constraints, simple coding ideas such as conditions and variables, and how science and technology connect to careers and communities.
Approved guide: NWT Science and Technology K–6 (2004), Physical science · planning fair tests, safety and solving design problems
Unit 2
How Science Works
Practises how scientists make predictions, collect data and use evidence, how explanations change over time, and the benefits and drawbacks of technologies.
Approved guide: NWT Science and Technology K–6 (2004), Physical science · the nature of science: hypotheses, data, evidence, and technologies and their consequences
Unit 3
Gravity & Friction
Working out net force, telling balanced from unbalanced forces, mass versus weight on the Moon and other planets, and when friction helps or causes problems.
Approved guide: NWT Science and Technology K–6 (2004), Earth and space science · gravity, weight and forces such as friction that act against motion
Unit 4
Buoyancy
Practises the idea that a fluid pushes up on objects, why some things float and others sink (density, shape and the fluid), and how ships, submarines and life jackets use buoyancy.
Approved guide: NWT Science and Technology K–6 (2004), Physical science · buoyancy: balanced and unbalanced forces, density, and floating and sinking
Unit 5
Flight
The four forces of flight and how balanced and unbalanced forces change motion, how air makes flight possible, how birds, bats and insects fly, and the impacts of aviation.
Approved guide: NWT Science and Technology K–6 (2004), Earth and space science · lift and other forces that oppose gravity
Unit 6
Stored Energy
Practises the idea that objects can hold stored energy (chemical, elastic, height) and that it can be transferred to cause events such as motion, heat and light.
Approved guide: NWT Science and Technology K–6 (2004), Physical science · stored energy in objects, and how it is transferred to cause events
Unit 7
Circuits
Conductors and insulators, what each part of a circuit does, and how series and parallel circuits behave and where each is used.
Approved guide: NWT Science and Technology K–6 (2004), Physical science · how electricity flows in battery-powered circuits
Unit 8
Electrical Safety
Practises safety rules for household electricity, batteries and circuits: keeping electricity away from water, handling cords and plugs, power lines, and safe use of low-voltage batteries.
Approved guide: NWT Science and Technology K–6 (2004), Physical science · safety precautions for electricity, and using equipment safely
Unit 9
Earth, Moon and Sun
Why we have day and night, seasons, Moon phases, eclipses and tides, and which bodies give off light and which reflect it.
Approved guide: NWT Science and Technology K–6 (2004), Earth and space science · Earth's rotation and tilt, day and night, and the seasons
Unit 10
Traits & Fossils
Practises how plants and animals pass traits to their offspring, the difference between inherited traits and learned skills, and how fossils give evidence of how organisms have changed over time.
Approved guide: NWT Science and Technology K–6 (2004), Life science · heredity, traits and behaviours, and fossils as evidence of change
Unit 11
Sorting Living Things
Telling mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish apart, vertebrates from invertebrates, the kingdoms, and the levels of classification.
Approved guide: NWT Science and Technology K–6 (2004), Life science · the variety of organisms and how they are grouped
Unit 12
Species & Hybrids
Practises what a species is, what viable offspring are, and hybrids such as mules, ligers, grolar bears and hybrid crops.
Approved guide: NWT Science and Technology K–6 (2004), Life science · the nature of plant and animal species: viable offspring and hybrids
