What your child practises

Dividing 2- and 3-digit numbers, finding remainders and deciding what they mean in a story (round up for buses, drop the extra for full bags), and estimating with friendly numbers.

Nunavut Curriculum approved guide: Alberta Mathematics K–9 (2007), Number · dividing with 1- and 2-digit divisors

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down the next digit, and repeat.
  2. What is left over at the end is the remainder.
  3. Check by multiplying back and adding the remainder.

Example: 47 ÷ 4 = ? 4 × 11 = 44. 47 − 44 = 3 left over. So 47 ÷ 4 = 11 remainder 3. Answer: 11 remainder 3
