What your child practises

Finding the repeating part (the core) of patterns like AB, ABB and ABBC, including patterns where colour and shape both change.

Nunavut Curriculum approved guide: Alberta Mathematics K–9 (2007), Patterns and Relations · repeating patterns, and translating them from one form to another

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. Some patterns grow. They go up by the same amount.
  2. Find how much it goes up each time.
  3. Use that to find the next one.

Example: 2, 4, 6, 8, ? Each number is 2 more. 8 + 2 = 10. Answer: 10
