Expressions & Equations

Evaluate, balance and solve

What your child practises

Children tell an expression from an equation, evaluate expressions, and solve equations by doing the same thing to both sides.

Newfoundland and Labrador Curriculum curriculum outcome: Patterns and relationships (by Grade 9) · expressions, equations and the distributive property

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. An expression has no equals sign: 3n + 2. An equation does: 3n + 2 = 11.
  2. Do the same operation to both sides to keep an equation balanced.
  3. Undo addition first, then undo multiplication.

Example: Solve 2n + 3 = 11. Subtract 3 from both sides: 2n = 8. Divide both sides by 2: n = 4. Answer: n = 4
