What your child practises

New Brunswick Curriculum skill descriptor: Number: Operations · adding and subtracting 2- and 3-digit numbers, with mental math and estimation

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. Line up the ones, tens and hundreds.
  2. Start with the ones, then tens, then hundreds.
  3. If a place goes over 9 when adding, regroup to the next place.

Example: 276 + 148 = ? Ones: 6 + 8 = 14. Write 4 and regroup 1 ten. Tens: 7 + 4 + 1 = 12. Write 2 and regroup 1 hundred. Hundreds: 2 + 1 + 1 = 4. Answer: 424
