Division

Sharing and grouping

What your child practises

Understanding division as sharing fairly and as making equal groups, and using multiplication facts to divide (3 × 4 = 12, so 12 ÷ 3 = 4).

Saskatchewan Curriculum outcome: N3.3 · division as sharing and grouping

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. Dividing shares things equally or makes equal groups.
  2. Think of the multiplication fact that goes with it.
  3. Ask: what times the divisor makes the number?

Example: 20 ÷ 4 = ? What times 4 makes 20? 4 × 5 = 20. Answer: 5

Sample questions

A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.

  1. Question 1

What number goes in the box?

    3 × = 12

    • 4
    • 5
    • 3
    • 9
    Show answer

    4

Hint: Count by 3s until you reach 12: 3, 6, 9, 12. How many 3s did you count?

  2. Question 2

    What is 12 ÷ 4?

    12 ÷ 4 = ?

    • 2
    • 8
    • 3
    • 4
    Show answer

    3

    Hint: Think multiplication: 4 × ? = 12. Count by 4s to 12: 4, 8, 12. That's 3 jumps.

  3. Question 3

    What is 10 ÷ 2?

    10 ÷ 2 = ?

    answer box

    Show answer

    5

    Hint: Think multiplication: 2 × ? = 10. Count by 2s to 10: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. That's 5 jumps.

  4. Question 4

Kenji puts 25 strawberries onto 5 plates, the same number on each. How many strawberries go on each plate?

    answer box

    Show answer

    5

    Hint: Share them out one at a time, like dealing cards, until they're all gone. Or think: 5 × ? = 25. 5 × 5 = 25.

  5. Question 5

    2 × 5 = 10. So what is 10 ÷ 2?

    10 ÷ 2 = ?

    • 2
    • 6
    • 5
    • 4
    Show answer

    5

Hint: Multiplying and dividing undo each other. 2 groups of 5 make 10, so 10 split into 2 groups is 5.

  6. Question 6

These 8 🍎 are in 2 equal rows. How many are in each row?

    answer box

    Show answer

    4

    Hint: 8 ÷ 2 = ? Count one row, or think 2 × ? = 8. 2 × 4 = 8.
