Shapes

Flat shapes and solid shapes

What your child practises

Naming and comparing 2D shapes by their sides and corners, and 3D objects by their faces and whether they roll or stack.

Ontario Curriculum expectation: E1.1, E1.3 · sorting 2D shapes and 3D objects and describing their features

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. Flat shapes have sides and corners.
  2. Solid shapes can roll, stack or slide.
  3. A sphere rolls every way, like a ball.

Example: Which solid shape rolls every way, like a ball? A cube has flat sides, so it slides. Only a sphere rolls every way. Answer: A sphere
