Grade 7 Science
9 units matched to the Manitoba Curriculum.
Learning focus
- What is matter made of?
- What is the role of gravity on Earth and in the Solar System?
- How does energy move on Earth, in ecosystems, and through space?
Units
Unit 1
Heat & Particles
Heat as energy linked to particle motion, temperature, expansion and contraction, changes of state, and the ways heat is generated (friction, electricity, burning, chemical reactions and the Sun).
Learning outcome: SCI.7.E.1, SCI.7.E.2, SCI.7.E.8 · the particle theory of matter, and how heat changes the motion of particles
Unit 2
Moving Heat
How heat is transmitted by conduction, convection and radiation, how the Sun's radiation heats different surfaces, and technologies such as insulation and double-pane windows that reduce heat loss.
Learning outcome: SCI.7.E.9 · conduction, convection and radiation
Unit 3
Gravity & Tides
Children learn that gravity is a pull between objects, tell mass from weight, and see how the Moon’s gravity causes ocean tides.
Learning outcome: SCI.7.E.4, SCI.7.E.5, SCI.7.E.6, SCI.7.E.7 · gravity, weight and mass, orbits, and tides
Unit 4
Our Solar System
Children learn the scale and members of the Solar System, why the Sun and stars appear to move, how latitude and longitude describe Earth’s place in space, and how people explore space.
Learning outcome: SCI.7.E.12, SCI.7.E.13, SCI.7.E.14, SCI.7.E.15, SCI.7.E.16 · the Solar System, the apparent motion of the sky, human space exploration, and latitude and longitude
Unit 5
Ecosystems
Biotic and abiotic parts of an ecosystem, how they interact, and the limiting factors and carrying capacity that decide how many organisms an ecosystem can support.
Learning outcome: SCI.7.E.17, SCI.7.E.21 · self-sustaining ecosystems and competition for resources
Unit 6
Photosynthesis
Children learn that plants use light energy, water and carbon dioxide to make glucose and oxygen, and why that matters for every food chain.
Learning outcome: SCI.7.E.18 · photosynthesis, energy, chlorophyll and glucose
Unit 7
Food Chains & Energy
Producers, consumers and decomposers, food chains and webs, how energy shrinks as it passes up a chain (about 10% each step), and what happens when part of a chain changes.
Learning outcome: SCI.7.E.19, SCI.7.E.20 · energy transfer in food chains and the roles of organisms
Unit 8
Cycles & Succession
How water, carbon and nitrogen are cycled through ecosystems, why cycling supports sustainability, and the difference between primary and secondary succession.
Learning outcome: SCI.7.E.22 · recycling of nutrients and the replenishing of energy
Unit 9
People & Ecosystems
How agriculture, harvesting and technologies affect ecosystems, such as monoculture, overfishing, invasive species and runoff, and ways to protect and restore balance. Includes reading simple data about an environmental measure.
Learning outcome: SCI.7.E.23 · effects on plants and animals when conditions change
