Patterns

What comes next?

What your child practises

Finding the repeating core of a pattern and describing how increasing patterns grow (skip counting).

BC Curriculum learning standard: Repeating and increasing patterns

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. Look at how much each number changes.
  2. That change is the rule.
  3. Use the rule to find the next number.

Example: 5, 10, 15, 20, ? Each step adds 5. 20 + 5 = 25. Answer: 25

Sample questions

A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.

  1. Question 1

    What number comes next?

    20, 25, 30, 35,

    • 41
    • 40
    • 36
    Show answer

    40

    Hint: Each number goes up by 5. 35 + 5 = 40.

  2. Question 2

    Which part keeps repeating?

    ⭐🌙☀️⭐🌙☀️⭐🌙☀️
    • ⭐ 🌙 ☀️
    • ☀️ 🌙 ⭐
    • ⭐ 🌙
    Show answer

    ⭐ 🌙 ☀️

Hint: Find where the pattern starts over again. The part before that is the core.

  3. Question 3

    What number comes next?

    4, 7, 10, 13,

    • 18
    • 16
    • 15
    Show answer

    16

    Hint: Each number goes up by 3. 13 + 3 = 16.

  4. Question 4

    What comes next?

    🐟🐚🐚🐟🐚🐚?
    • 🐟fish
    • 🐚shell
    • 🦀crab
    Show answer

    🐟 fish

Hint: Say the pattern out loud: fish, shell, shell… What part repeats?

    • 6
    • 4
    • 9
    Show answer
