Finding pairs that make 10 (like 6 + 4) with ten frames, fingers and stories. Making 10 is a key strategy for adding.

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. Some pairs make 10: 6 and 4, 7 and 3, 8 and 2.
  2. Start at one number and count up to 10.
  3. The steps you counted are the other number.

Example: 7 + ? = 10 Start at 7. Count up: 8, 9, 10. That is 3 steps. Answer: 3
